What's new at Anholt Harbor

Spring and summer are on their way and we are excited to share exciting news from our beautiful island where we are constantly working to improve the guest experience.

New piping system on all bridges.

We are happy to announce that we have implemented a new pipe system on all our bridges! With the establishment of a 110 mm pipe network out to the piers, we now have pressurized pipes and outlets on all bridges, enabling fire and rescue crews to act quickly in case of an emergency on the water. Safety and preparedness is our priority!

Environmental station.

To strengthen our commitment to environmentally conscious boating, we have established an environmental station where boaters can empty their holding tanks with ease and help take care of our beautiful marine environment!

Terrace at Sailor House.

A new terrace on the first floor of Sailor House is under construction and this summer, sails will be added to the outside so that our guests can enjoy shelter from the wind and great views.

Renovation of toilet and shower facilities.

We continue to renew our facilities with brand new tiles in the shower and changing areas. It's going to be really nice.

More rescue ladders.

We have also expanded our rescue options with even more rescue ladders in the harbor basin, so you can always feel safe and secure wherever you are in the harbor.

We look forward to welcoming you to Anholt and giving you an unforgettable experience in the new surroundings

Investments despite challenging 2023 summer season

Many may be looking forward to the upcoming spring and summer of 2024. Here we first take a look back at the summer of 2023.

You may recall that the summer of 2023 brought unpredictable weather, with windy and unstable conditions from week 27 well into August. Our absolute peak season, when we are usually fully booked. Unfortunately, the weather conditions contributed to slightly fewer people taking the boat trip out to "our" beautiful island in the Kattegat. The visitor numbers and results are therefore affected by the weather and for the first time in several years, Anholt Harbour has seen a decrease in the number of yachtsmen compared to previous years.

Significant investments on the way

Despite the declining revenue for 2023, Anholt Harbour has decided to invest significantly to improve the facilities for the upcoming season. We have planned a number of improvements and upgrades to ensure an even better experience for our guests:

Maintaining buoys and installing more

We will ensure our buoys are in top condition and increase the number to meet the need for safe and easy mooring.

New pipeline on the bridges

We are particularly pleased with the upgrade with a new pipeline, as it significantly increases safety. This includes replacing pipelines on the bridges and upgrading with outlets for emergency response hoses, so we are better equipped to handle any emergency situations in the event of a fire.

Upgrade of rescue ladders

Safety and security are at the forefront of our minds. That's why this investment in new rescue ladders is another safety measure. Should a guest fall into the water, there is now easier access to get back to safety on the bridge. The rescue ladders are covered with fluorescent tape and paint, making them visible both day and night.

Installing an eco station

With the new upcoming eco station, sailors will be able to empty their holding tank and contribute to environmentally friendly practices.

Upgrading the bathing area and toilet facilities

In the bathing area and at the washbasins, we are refreshing with new tiles, in both the women's and men's rooms of course. This improves hygiene and comfort for our guests and makes cleaning easier for our staff.

New 1st floor terrace at Sailor House

Our amazing view from Sailor House will not change. But by summer 2024, our guests will be able to enjoy the view from a brand new terrace. We're building a new first-floor terrace in beautiful wooden materials to match the surroundings. Guests can take a seat on the café furniture and benches and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere with a view of the marina and the Kattegat. We are very excited to showcase and inaugurate it.

All these investments are part of our commitment and desire to create a better and more pleasant experience for all our guests. We look forward to welcoming you all to an upgraded Anholt Harbor in the coming season.

Practical info

Sailor House will be closed in weeks 10, 11 and 12 in 2024 for renovation work. The bathing and changing facilities cannot be used during this time. The ticket and card machine will also be out of service during the same period. However, access to the toilets will be available.

Protect the marine environment at Anholt - sign up as a marine environment warden

Marine environmentalists are volunteers who take the lead in protecting the environment by picking up litter and, of course, not throwing anything on the ground or at sea. The Marine Environmental Wardens campaign is led by the Operations Staff of the Joint Defence Command, with the aim of protecting our waters.

Your efforts make a difference

In the Sailor House at Anholt Harbour, seaweed bags and posters are ready for those who sign up as sea environmental guardians on Anholt. Right now there are already 19,000 marine conservationists spread across the country, but your efforts are needed to make a difference for the sea and nature at Anholt.

You can sign up as a marine environmental guardian on the website www.havmiljøvogter.dk

Heart beats for Anholt

Klaus Jensen is one of those who keep the wheels turning on Anholt. In his primary function as harbour master, he is the service organ for the many thousands of sailing boats that set course for Anholt every summer. And in his 'leisure' role as restaurateur, he makes sure they can get a good meal at the cosy harbour.

Leisure is not the most important thing. During the high season, Klaus Jensen is busy from 6am to midnight, but he loves it and has no regrets about making the leap from being a business owner on Djursland to living on Anholt four years ago. Part of the explanation is that he has family and roots on the island that go back hundreds of years.

SEE OPPORTUNITIES

Klaus Jensen is good at seeing opportunities, and he strikes when they're there. A job as a blacksmith at BASF in Grenaa gave him the opportunity to start his own business. It grew into a company with over 100 employees before the crisis made it necessary to cut back. Later, he bought a car-painting company, which was expanded and later sold, and when 'Finn's Fisk' on Anholt came up for sale, Klaus Jensen and his wife Anja took it over and started the restaurant 'Algot'. The business has since expanded to include an ice cream shop, the sale of gourmet hot dogs and a property that today houses, among other things, the grocery store on the harbour.

This summer Klaus Jensen had 36 employees in his companies on Anholt.

"The first years I was in the kitchen at 'Algot'. It was hard work, but I really got to know the business and the products. It helps me today when I have to plan and buy," says Klaus Jensen.

HARBOUR SERVICE ON DELIVERY BIKE

In summertime, it is of course the job of harbour master that takes up the most time. Klaus Jensen is known to the many tourists who come to the harbour on his bicycle, which is his preferred means of transport. Tourists find that Klaus helps them with practical matters, good advice, tips for excursions on the island and much, much more. He is a very visible ambassador for Anholt.

"We are constantly working to improve our service to tourists. We have to do it professionally - but still in our own way, and we seem to have succeeded", says Klaus Jensen.

"We certainly get a lot of praise from tourists," he says.

The number of visiting sailing boats is steadily increasing, and this year all records have been broken. 13,500 boats have visited Anholt Harbour so far - 3,200 more than last year. Around 40,500 tourists have been personally welcomed by Klaus Jensen or one of his team in 2018, which has been the biggest and longest season in living memory. Never have so many visited the Kattegat Island. Success obliges, and now the harbour is being extended with a new mooring bridge for the island's own boat owners. The former jetty and a new floating bridge will provide space for an additional 60 boats in the current harbour basin, while the outer basin is being deepened to allow for future expansion with more floating bridges.

LONGER SEASON

Klaus Jensen is looking forward to offering more capacity. On the biggest day this summer, there were 696 yachts in Anholt Harbour, and this is only possible because the sailors are received in a dinghy, from which they are given a place. This allows the harbour to be 'packed' properly and is a service that makes sailors cheer.

But Anholt will also expand opportunities in other areas. Namely by making the season longer. This will be done by attracting tourists with activities and events such as "Lobster Days", literature festival, "Long Outside Festival" and much more.

"We have been working on extending the seasons and today we have a good post-season. Different activities will help to create activity in the pre-season, so we can expand the number of tourists and use the capacity optimally," says the enterprising harbormaster, before he jumps on the bike to receive another team of sailing tourists.

Anholt desert awarded

Realdania has designated Anholt's Desert as one of the most beautiful natural attractions in Denmark. Therefore, the nature area is now included in the inspiration guide 'Smutturen', which tells about 50 unique Danish nature areas. The 50 sites were selected from 580 who competed to be included in the fine company.

The desert has a nature that is not experienced anywhere else in Denmark.

The area consists of dune and heath landscapes, and Anholt is so far out to sea that the supply of nutrients is very small. As a result, slow-growing and extremely rare plants such as lichen can be found in the desert.

The area is Northern Europe's largest low moor and is home to many different species, such as reindeer lichen.

Anholt as a Danish gin mecca

Læsø is known for its southern salt, and Samsø is associated with potatoes. Now a couple of enthusiasts are setting out to make Anholt Denmark's mecca for gin lovers.

It was the presence of juniper berries in the desert on Anholt that gave Aarhus musician Thøger Dixgaard the idea to start a gin production on Anholt. Together with his friend Jacob Kjærgaard, who lives on Anholt, the ambition is to make a pure and good gin. "A gin that tastes so good that no one would dare to mix it with tonic", Thøger Dixgaard has previously stated.

Anholt gin is produced and bottled at Nordisk Brænderi, which is most of all known for producing world-class quality products.

There will be plenty of opportunity to taste the goods while on Anholt. Jacob Kjærgaard has set up a large, dedicated gin bar in the former ice cream shop.
